Benefits To Having a Dog…

My wife and I have a chocolate lab, and she is a pretty amazing dog.  Sure, she can be a handful at times with the excessive drooling, shedding, and waking up at 6:00 AM every day…even on the weekends.  Despite these minor difficulties to having her in our lives, Lilly is totally worth it.  We love that dog like crazy…some would say she’s even a little spoiled.

As a dog lover, I might be a little bias when it comes to the pros of having a dog, so I won’t discuss my opinion, only the facts.

Numerous studies have been conducted to see benefits of having a dog in your life.

Here’s what some of the studies found…

1. They Make You Happier…

Studies have shown that dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression when compared to non-dog owners. Some studies show that just by looking at a dog increases the levels of serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin in the brain.  Because of this, dog owners are less lonely and have higher self-esteem.

2. They Help Your Heart…

According to the British Journal of Health (2004), dog owners have been found to have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure.  Dog owners also had fewer heart attacks.  In fact, just petting a dog has been found to lower blood pressure and heart rate.

3. They Help With Allergies…

Many people are allergic to dogs, but having a dog in the house, if you have a child, will make the child less likely to develop allergies over their lifetime.  According to Allyene, “Researchers found that having a dog seemed to have some “immunotherapy” benefit and reduced other allergies by as much as four times.”  Kids who grow up with dogs have stronger immune systems and miss less school.

4. They Reduce Stress and Anxiety…

Studies have found that just interacting with a dog significantly lowers cortisol levels.  Cortisol increases blood pressure and is released into your body when you are stressed.  According to Aaron Katcher, M.D., the professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, “When we are around animals, we become more joyous, communicative, expressive, and calm.”
